I think you may be referring to Amaryllis belladonna. Sometimes they are referred to as Surprise lillies or Naked Ladies (I don't know why). They first appear in spring with deep green strappy leaves. They go dormant, then in summer, they re-appear as stick straight stems with a single bloom on top.
Any idea where I can see (online) what the first leaves look like? There is a huge cluster of daffodil-looking leaves (no flowers) in the area where the Amaryllis belladonna were last summer. We had about 10 sets coming from the same 1' area.
The ones there are about knee high (maybe a little more), very straight, but fanned out.
Sure sounds like it. I just got home from work. I have 3 phone messages that I need to get back to, then I will go out and check the ones in my yard. I'll get back here in about 15 minutes.
So much for 15 minutes....I should have known I'd stay out unitl it got dark! Your description matches my plants perfectly, so I'd say those are the amaryllis leaves. Before long, they will go dormant and you may forget about them. Without fail, though, they will pop up seemingly overnight!
