I have a clothesline in my backyard, it is one of the umbrella style ones that have a single post.
There are lots of weeds and grasses around it, which seems to attract spiders and bugs.
Anyway, I built a square around it using 2by4's that I took from a wall I removed in my house.
I want to do a no dig approach.
I have been saving lots of cardboard for this project, so I am going to lay down several layers. Now, what should I put on top of the cardboard?
Compost from Home depot? Wood mulch? And how much? I want to grow something like Irish moss around the clothesline (don't worry, I don't use it often)
I realize that the 2by4's not being pressure treated wood will eventually decay, but I am ok with that. By the time that happens I might actually be ready to do gardening there.
So, can anyone help me with what I should lay on top of my cardboard?
I think that you may be asking about lasagna gardening so that you can plant your moss in this area.
If that is the case, you want to layer organic items on it like compost, alfalfa, leaf hummus, grass clippings, and top with mulch. I would immediately water in the cardboard after putting it down, and thoroughly water everything after finishing it. I use newspaper myself. It is probably harder to wet the cardboard, and it will take longer to break down, but you can certainly use it.

I decided to use cardboard because the area is stubbornly weedy, and I have so many cardboard boxes on hand (between buying diapers, ordering stuff on the internet, and pizza boxes from me and the neighbors)
I also don't have any newspapers. :-)
I wasn't able to find any moss plants around town since it's as they say, the end of the season, so I am just going to prepare the area and keep it weed free until I either find some this year, decide on seed, or just keep it till next year to do.
