My family and I decided to check out a new Christmas tree farm in the area that we just heard about. It was a small, family-run farm where everyone pitched in to help us find the tree. Out in the large field of Scotch pines, there were trees of all sizes, from 3-6 ft. The shaping was from rather narrow to quite wide. The cost was about 4.50/ft, no matter the size. We chose a fat, 4 ft. to fit on a table so our toddler could not knock it over. When you choose your tree, they give you a measuring stick, so you can tell exactly the size, tall and wide, so it will fit. Once the boys cut it down, they hauled it to the shed and the dad shook out the dead needles so they wouldn't fall out in your house, and then bailed it in a netting, and loaded it for us. Before they bailed it, they took our family picture with the tree for their scrapbook. While they were loading it, we went to the front porch to pay for it. On the front porch, 15-20 wreaths were displayed, all decorated differently, for us to choose from. They were fresh and beautiful deep green and smelled so good. The mom had fresh frosted sugar cookies and hot cider for us to enjoy while we waited. We bought a new tree stand that is really easy to use. They showed us how they drilled a hole in the bottom of the trunk after we lined it up. When we got home, all we had to do was bring in the bailed tree and set it on the pin in the tree stand and take off the net. It took only seconds and it was easy and stood straight. The best thing about buying a fresh real tree was that it lasted a LONG time. I didn't take it down until New Year's Day and the few needles were caught up in the bag they had for disposing of the tree. We set it up outside the window in the stand (without the bag) and hung bird food on it for the rest of the winter for our toddler to enjoy watching. We'll be going back next Christmas and make this a family tradition. Our toddler will enjoy seeing himself in their scrapbook.
