Parfrey's Glen is a rocky gorge in the south side of the Baraboo Hills within the Devil’s Lake State Park property. The glen was designated Wisconsin's first State Natural Area, due to many rare plants found there. On the short hike into the glen - less than one mile - you will find moist and cool shade allowing many trees to thrive there that are more typical of northern Wisconsin including the yellow birch, mountain maple, and the red elder.
There are also many rare plant species, including the federally threatened northern monkshood (Aconitum noveboracense) and state-threatened round stemmed false foxglove (Agalinus gattingeri), and two state-threatened birds, the cerulean warbler (Dendroica cerulea) and Acadian flycatcher (Empidonax virescens).
