Dawes is a great place for everyone from the youngest child to an expert with a Phd in botany. (Not absolutely sure about the latter since I don't have one!) There are miles of trails. A nice nature center which has do it yourself activities for the times it is unattended. A lovely feature is that all of the specimen plants are labeled so if you your thinking "hmm that sure looks familiar" you can walk over and see what it actually it. Dawes had regularly scheduled programs as well special events. My favorite place is the Japanese garden with a large reflecting pool and a small tea house where you can sit and, ah reflect. There are special collections of hollies, evergreens, crabapples, oaks. If you walk through the woods in April when the trilliums are in bloom you will never want to leave.

If you are in the area and have an interest in trees and shrubs, don't miss a visit to Dawes Arboretum.
The Dawes counts over 4500 unique varieties of shrubs and trees on its property and is especially known for its large collection of crabapples. And covering over 1700 acres, The Dawes has plenty of space to show off its beautiful conifer collection, a lovely Japanese Garden, groves of flowering trees, and a peculiar folly of a hedge spelling out its name.
